1882 Photo - Original Log Cabin
The pioneer cabin pictured above remains today inside the home that is owned by Rob & Kim Briggs, just east of Oakland, Iowa. This structure was built in the 1850's by the Mormons in Big
Grove, Iowa (now Oakland).
When the Mormons moved to Utah, Alexander Frizzell (who settled in Iowa in 1860), bought the cabin, numbered each log, and moved it to its present location.
The following is an account taken from the history of Pottawattamie County, published in 1891:
"Alexander L. Frizzell moved to Center Township in 1860. He bought a log house which had been built by Mormons. The logs are oak, the best quality in the county. Mr. Frizzell moved this house to its present location, and here he has a home which for comfort and convenience is not surpassed by many a more pretentious looking structure. Here he and his good wife dispense hospitality in a generous way to friend and stranger, regardless of creed or doctrine. Mr. Frizzell has a fine orchard and grove, good stables, cribs, etc. and is engaged in general farming and stock raising. His farm comprises 160 acres, all under a splendid state of cultivation..."
